Anatomical resection of the right hepatic subsegments preceded by suprahilar ligation of the portal pedicles

Abstract

In recent years, with the rapid increase of cirrhotic patients with smaller hepatocellular carcinomas, limited hepatectomies of less than one segment tend to greatly outnumber the regular and extended lobectomies. In view of the early intrahepatic spread of this cancer through portal blood stream [1], an anatomical segmental or subsegmental resection which is preceded by initial ligation of Glisson’s pedicles at the liver hilum is highly desirable even in such a limited hepatectomy.
