Abstract
The platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) was first identified as having a potent growth-promoting activity in bovin serum, followed by evidence of this activity over glia, smooth muscle cell, and fibroblasts. Purification of PDGF revealed a heterodimeric glycoprotein composed of two basic polypeptide chains, A and B, in a disulfide linkage. Many PDGF-like growth factors, called cellular PDGF (PDGFc), were found without platelets, and were composed of AA, AB, and BB. We investigated PDGFc using 4 cell lines and, in this paper, we describe the existence of PDGF (AA, BB) in tumor cell lines and the effects of PDGF (AA, BB) on the fibroblasts and on the secretion of PDGF from the tumor cell lines.
