A Simple Rendering for Penumbra Caused by Sunlight

CG International ’90

Abstract

A simple rendering method for penumbra caused by sunlight is proposed to create more realistic outdoor scenery. To reduce the storage needed for penumbra areas, only four points are used to define a penumbra area. The proposed method can render complex penumbra scenes caused by such objects as curtains. In addition, the calculation method of illumination in the shadows cast by natural objects, such as trees, mapped on a transparent virtual plane are discussed. The photographs of computer generated images with penumbrae are compared to those without penumbra. Those photographs show the usefulness of the proposed method.
