Summary

A personal experience is recounted of internal prosthetic replacement of a long segmental bony defect about the knee joint after en bloc resection for an extensive bone tumor. Three patients with two distal femoral and two proximal tibial bone tumors were treated with resection and replacement by hinged knee replacement prostheses and followed up for more than 10 years. One patient underwent amputation because of the extensive recurrence of the giant cell tumor 5 years after the joint replacement and finally died of multiple lung metastases 5 years later. The others were followed up for 10 and 11 years respectively. Each has a painless stable knee with a useful range of motion.
