Fracture Process Zone Models for Concrete and Ceramics

Aggregate crack-bridging in concrete and particulate crack-bridging in ceramics are modelled by modified Barenblatt-Dugdale cohesive zones. These fracture process zones are incorporated into dynamic and static finite element models of an unnotched impact loaded, concrete beam and an unnotched monotonic and cyclic loaded, ceramic-matrix/ceramic-fiber beam, respectively. Maximum stress and crack tip opening displacement criteria are used as fracture and stable crack growth criteria, respectively. Crack initiation and crack propagation histories in the two specimens are computed and the results are compared with limited but available experimental results.
