Summary

A formula for the error estimation of strains is derived for tagged magnetic resonance (MR) images of the heart based on a strain interpolation method in a triangular element commonly used in a finite element method. Then the accuracy of strain estimation is discussed for images in a cardiac cycle. The result of error estimation shows that the error of strains is determined by an error not in the reference phase but in the current phase of an image. It also indicates that a large number of pixels for a grid interval reduce the estimated strain error. A smoothing method is introduced for a small region of interest. An example of smoothing shows a reasonably averaged change in the minimum strain of a cardiac cycle.
