Abstract

Squamous cell carcinoma has been regarded for many years to be the most common malignant tumor of the esophagus in Western [1] and Asian [2] countries. Studies have shown, however, that the time trend incidence of esophageal carcinoma is subjected to geographical variation [3]. In fact, the incidence of esophageal carcinoma has increased in some countries, has remained stable in others, and has decreased in yet others [3].
