Low Molecular Weight Heparin in the Treatment of Deep Vein Thrombosis of Inferior Limbs

Abstract

Unfractionated heparin (UFH) is still the most commonly administered drug in the treatment of deep vein thrombbsis (DVT) . It may be given intravenously either by continuous infusion or by intermittent injection. Of these routes, continuous infusion is preferred because it produces less bleeding complications. UFH may also be given by subcutaneous injection twice daily. Recent clinical trials heve shown that subcutaneous UFH is a safe and effective alternative to continuous intravenous UFH in the treatment of DVT (1).
