Abstract
The NdBa2Cu3Oy (Nd123) bulk superconductor, to which Sm2BaCuO5 (Sm211) particles were intentionally added, was prepared through the so-called MMTG process in Ar (99% purity) flowing atmosphere at an ambient pressure. The quasi-single-crystal thus grown was about 1cm3 in dimension. Its polished surface was observed with an optical microscope. The superconducting transition temperature T C (onset) for the sample subjected to post annealing in oxygen atmosphere was 95K, which was higher than that of the Nd123 bulk with Nd4Ba2Cu2O10 (Nd422) addition. This improvement in T C was attributed to the suppression of the partial substitution of the trivalent rare-earth ion for the divalent Ba ion in the Ba site, since the Sm ion possessing a smaller atomic radius than that of the Nd ion, is most likely soluble in the Nd site of the Nd123-phase matrix. The microstructure was found to be composed of (Nd1-xSmx)4Ba2Cu2O10 (NdSm422) particles embedded homogeneously in the Nd1-xSmxBa2Cu3Oy (NdSm123) phase matrix in spite of the Sm211 addition.
