Electromechanically driven, computer-controlled implantable cardiac assist device

  • Chapter
Book cover Artificial Heart 2

Summary

An electromechanically driven cardiac assist device has been developed for long-term implantation inside the body. The system is composed of a pusher plate-type blood pump and an actuator with a DC brushless motor and ball screw. For the reliability of the system, a minimal number of sensors are incorporated. Sixteen-bit and eight-bit microprocessors are used for the pump operation and motor speed control, respectively. The motor is driven by a width-modulated, pulsed signal of the sinusoidal voltage wave having variable voltage and fixed duty ratio. An open-loop control method has been developed and its performance was tested in vitro. Although the system fulfilled the design specifications, the efficiency was rather low due to the open-loop control. To overcome this problem, we decided to use the back electromotive force of the motor as a feedback signal. The hardware and software have been redesigned and are being tuned.
