Artificial Induction of Oocyte Maturation and Ovulation

Abstract

Freshwater eels are a very popular food in many countries of the world. Many European and Asian countries intensively culture eels in freshwater. In Japan, the Japanese eel, Anguilla japonica, is one of the major species for freshwater cultivation. The aquaculture production of the Japanese eel in recent years has been about 22,000 metric tons a year. Eel aquaculture is totally dependent on wild glass eels captured in estuaries. However, the abundance of glass eels has gradually decreased over the past 25 years, and the price of glass eels has risen considerably, exceeding 1 million yen per kilogram in some years. Therefore, to maintain the natural glass eel resources and to obtain reliable supplies of glass eels for aquaculture, development of an artificially induced breeding procedure for eels, including oocyte maturation and ovulation, has been a major goal.
