Practical Aspects of Hair Transplantation in Asians

Abstract

It is key to possess knowledge about the hair profile of South Asians and about techniques relevant to deal with potential problems arising from such hair characteristics to bring out the best result for the patient. The insights and empirical data shared in this article are based on a patient group of 1310 South Asians from the Indian subcontinent, treated between 2010 and 2016. Hair characteristics that affect hair transplant and discussed here are colour, curl, calibre and density. Each of these characteristics varies across ethnicities at a broader level and accordingly impacts the result of a hair transplant. These characteristics determine not only the aesthetics of the transplant’s result but also the technique employed by the surgeon as discussed in this article.
