Comprehensive Assessment of Aortopathy Using Catheterization

Abstract

Aortopathy is represented by aortic wall histological alterations, which are translated into alterations of mechanical property of the aortic wall. Because aortic pressure waveform in itself contains comprehensive information about aortic wall mechanical property, analysis of aortic pressure waveform either alone or coupled with aortic flow provides important diagnostic and therapeutic information about aortopathy. Catheter examination is the only way to precisely obtain the aortic waveform and thus plays an independent role compared to numerous noninvasive imaging modalities, such as echocardiogram, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging. In this chapter, we summarize our knowledge about the aortic wall mechanical properties in several forms of aortopathy elegantly assessed by catheter examination.
