Carbon Ion Radiotherapy for Unresectable Osteosarcoma of the Trunk

Abstract

Osteosarcoma is a radioresistant tumor. There have been few reports on the effectiveness of radiotherapy for unresectable osteosarcoma using photon (X-ray) beams. Carbon ion beams have a unique physical advantage for avoiding irradiation of critical organs, and their biological effectiveness is higher than that of X-ray and proton beams. These specific characteristics are beneficial for the treatment of sarcomas. Carbon ion radiotherapy has thus been suggested as an effective local therapy for unresectable osteosarcoma of the trunk.
