Abstract
A cycle that employs gas as a working fluid is called a gas cycle. Among heat engines, the one that employs combustion gas is called an internal combustion engine. This includes open-cycle gas turbine engines and reciprocating engines, such as the gasoline engine. On the other hand, an engine that heats the working fluid by heat generated outside is called an external combustion engine, and this includes closed-cycle gas turbine engines and steam engines.
