Abstract

In this Chapter, the author specifically focuses on the socioeconomic and arsenic related situation that prevailed in three villages of Meherpur in December, 2000. Meherpur has been noted as one of the arsenic-affected districts in Bangladesh. The three selected villages of Bagoan Union (an administrative unit) were Bagoan, Tarangar and Dholmari; No significant remedial action was found to be taking place there at the time of the survey, albeit the Department of Public Health Engineering (Meherpur) informed that these three villages were badly affected. The findings show that Taranagar was the worst-hit in terms of arsenic contamination in ground water among the three villages.
