Abstract
In this chapter, DFB-LDs and DBR-LDs are compared, and it is shown that DFB-LDs are superior to DBR-LDs from the viewpoint of stable single longitudinal mode operations. As the most stable single longitudinal mode LDs, phase-shifted DFB-LDs are explained in detail, and the journal letter on the first manufactured phase-shifted DFB-LD is reviewed by the author of the journal letter himself. As surface emitting LDs, both edge-emitting type and vertical cavity type are shown. In addition, special features of the vertical cavity surface emitting LDs are summarized. Coupled cavity LDs, which were expected as light sources for large-capacity, long-span optical fiber communication systems before successful manufacturing of the phase-shifted DFB-LDs, are also briefly described.
