Abstract
Hepatocytes differentiated from human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) or induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) have a wide range of potential applications in biomedical research, drug discovery, and the treatment of liver disease. In this review, we provide an up-to-date overview of the wide variety of hepatic differentiation protocols. Moreover, we discuss the application of these protocols to three-dimensional culture systems in an attempt to induce hepatocyte-like cells with high hepatic functions.
