Abstract

Southeast Asia has one of the most biologically diverse ecosystems in the world. Although occupying only 3% of the earth’s surface, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) region boasts of globally significant terrestrial and marine biodiversity that is home to an astonishing 18% of all known species in the world. It has the most diverse coral reefs in the world, home to the mega-diverse countries of Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines. It spans several unique biogeographic units such as Indo-Burma, Malesia, Sundaland, Wallacea, and the Central Pacific.
