Abstract

At present, EUS-FNA is a reliable technique for obtaining tissue samples of the sub-mucosal tumor with minimal risks. A large group of submucosal lesions such as lipomas (hyperechoic mass), cysts (anechoic mass), and submucosal varices has typical features that allow accurate diagnosis based solely on the data gathered from endoscopy and EUS imaging [1–4]. However, an important subset of submucosal lesions such as GISTs, leiomyoma, neurinoma, carcinoid tumors, ectopic pancreas, lymphoid mass tissues, SMT-like cancers, and metastases may have overlapping echo (hypoechoic solid mass) and endoscopic features and cannot be accurately determined without a biopsy sample. Therefore, EUS-FNA should be performed for all hypoechoic solid tumors imaged by EUS (Fig. 17.1) [2].
