Seit Mitte der 1990er Jahre findet das Konzept des Sozialkapitals zunehmende Aufmerksamkeit in der betriebswirtschaftlichen Forschung (Adler/Kwon 2002). Trotz der immer noch großen, begrifflichen Unschärfe des Konzepts (Matiaske 2005: 81) kann Sozialkapital in einem ersten Zugriff als das Aggregat der Ressourcen begriffen werden, die durch ein Netzwerk sozialer Beziehungen mobilisiert werden können (Nahapiet/Ghoshal 1998). Zentrales Kennzeichen der Sozialkapital-Forschung ist deshalb der Fokus auf die sozialen Beziehungen von Akteuren sowie auf die Struktur sozialer Netzwerke.
