Mobile Informations- und Kommunikationstechnologien (IKT) setzen sich zunehmend im Geschäftsleben durch. Im betrieblichen Einsatz (Mobile/M-Business) versprechen sie die Verbesserung von Effizienz und Produktivität (vgl. Gebauer/Shaw 2004, 19 ff), Flexibilität und steigende Erträge. Obwohl M-Business in seiner ganzen Breite medial diskutiert wird, bleiben wichtige Fragen, wie die nach unternehmerischen Nutzeffekten, zielführenden Strategien (vgl. Wamser/Buschmann 2005, 21), erfolgwirksamen Anwendungen und Erfolgsfaktoren, nur unzureichend beantwortet. Die resultierende Unsicherheit wirkt sich auf die M-Business-Haltung von kleinen und mittleren Unternehmen (KMU) aus. Sie ist ein Grund dafür, dass rund 72% der KMU mobile Lösungen bisher weder im Einsatz, noch in der Planung haben (vgl. Witzi 2005, 40). Große Unternehmen sind dagegen gemessen an der Wirtschaftsdemographie überproportional im M-Business repräsentiert (vgl. Kurbel/Krybus 2006a, 3 f.).
