Der Begriff Atmosphäre ist ein gängiger Ausdruck der Alltagssprache. Sein Gebrauch im nichtmeteorologischen Sinne ist bereits seit mindestens dem 18. Jahrhundert belegbar. In der Alltagssprache wird der Begriff Atmosphäre vornehmlich dann gebraucht, wenn Menschen versuchen, den stimmungsmäßigen Charakter von Orten zu beschreiben. So wird die Beschreibung Es herrschte eine tolle Atmosphäre zum Beispiel oft zur Bewertung von Restaurant-, Konzertoder auch Sportveranstaltungsbesuchen verwendet. Häufig wird auch von Atmosphären gesprochen, ohne sie durch Eigenschaftsworte näher zu kennzeichnen. Mit der Formulierung Atmosphäre haben impliziert man zumeist, dass sich ein Ort durch spezielle Eigenschaften auszeichnet, die beim Menschen eine gewisse emotionale Ergriffenheit hinterlassen. Offenbar verstehen die meisten Menschen auch ohne nähere Bestimmung, wovon die Rede ist, wenn von der Atmosphäre einer bestimmten Umgebung gesprochen wird. Beim Versuch, Atmosphären näher zu bestimmen, treten allerdings Schwierigkeiten auf. Meist erfolgt ihre Beschreibung anhand von solchen Adjektiven, mit denen sich auch Stimmungslagen von Personen bezeichnen lassen. So wird von der beschwingten oder gelösten Atmosphäre einer Party gesprochen, von der gespannten Atmosphäre eines politischen Gesprächs oder der bedrückten Atmosphäre eines Novembertages. Mit diesen Ausdrucksweisen werden genau genommen Stimmungslagen oder Gefühle anderer Personen beziehungsweise bestimmte Merkmale der Umgebung beschrieben, die uns dazu veranlassen, den Atmosphären diese Eigenschaften zuzuschreiben.

Die Bedeutung von Kognitionen bei der Auslösung von Emotionen wird viel diskutiert und ist bis heute nicht hinreichend geklärt. Vertreter der biologisch-orientierten Emotionstheorie erklären Emotionen in erster Linie als biologische Funktion des Zentralnervensystems und betrachten Aktivierungszustände, die sich im menschlichen Aus drucksverhalten äußern.
