Der Entwicklungs- und Durchsetzungsprozess der Automatisierungstechnologie in Japan war mit entscheidend für den rasanten Aufstieg der japanischen Industrie in den ersten Dekaden nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg. Durch Steigerung von Produktivität und Flexibilität sowie durch Verbesserung der Fertigungsqualität von Produktionseinrichtungen bildete die Automatisierungstechnologie Grundlage und Motor des japanischen Wirtschaftswunders. Noch heute ist der hohe Stand der japanischen Prozesstechnologie zentraler Wettbewerbsvorteile vieler Unternehmen auf internationalen Märkten.
