Der japanische Einzelhandelsmarkt ist der zweitgrößte der Welt. In Kaufkraftparitäten gemessen übersteigt die Konsumnachfrage der japanischen Bevölkerung das Niveau der deutschen und US-amerikanischen Konsumenten (World Bank 2001, S. 232f.). Trotzdem wurde der japanischen Handelslandschaft auf Grund der hohen Markteintrittsbarrieren, der starken Fragmentierung des Handelsmarktes und der Komplexität der Distributionsstrukturen auf der Großhandelsstufe in der Literatur bisher vergleichsweise wenig Beachtung geschenkt (Dawson/Larke 2004, S. 76ff.).
