Hypothesentestende Verfahren werden immer dann benötigt, wenn von einer Stichprobe auf eine Population geschlossen werden soll. Regression, t-Test usw. sind weit verbreitet, trotzdem bestehen Fehlkonzeptionen und Missverständnissen bezüglich deren Aussagekraft und Logik. (1986) beispielsweise legte Wissenschaftlern folgende Fragen vor (übersetzung durch den Autor): Untersucht wird die Wirkung einer Trainingsmaßnahme auf die Arbeitsleistung. Verglichen werden eine Experimental- und eine Kontrollgruppe (pro Gruppe n=20). Uberprüft werden die Ergebnisse anhand eines t-Tests (t=2,7; FG=18; p=.01). Nullhypothese: Es gibt keinen Unterschied zwischen den Gruppen. Experimentalhypothese: Es besteht ein Unterschied zwischen den Gruppen.
