Leadership als Beeinflussung der weichen Faktoren in Unternehmen richtet sich zunehmend auf die Frage, wie Teams oder ganze Bereiche motiviert und mobilisiert werden können. Dabei argumentieren wissenschaftliche und praxisorientierte Forscher (vgl. Quinn/Dutton 2005; Tushman/O’Reilly 1996) zunehmend, dass das Ausmaß an Organisationaler Energie für den Grad an Produktivität von Teams und Unternehmen zentral ist (vgl. Bruch/Ghoshal 2003; Bruch/Vogel 2005). Es macht einen erheblichen Unterschied, ob ein Unternehmen hoch energetisch ist, schnell Innovationen hervorbringt und Veränderungen mit Leichtigkeit bewältigt oder ob es eher träge ist, Prozesse langwierig sind und wenig bewegt wird. Dieser Unterschied wird durch das Ausmaß an Organisationaler Energie bestimmt. Sie beeinflusst auch maßgeblich die Leistungsfähigkeit und den Erfolg von Unternehmen und Mitarbeitern (vgl. Dutton 2003). In dynamischen und innovativen Unternehmen gelingt es Führungskräften, die Energie der Mitarbeiter zu mobilisieren und produktiv nutzbar zu machen (vgl. Tushman/O’Reilly 1996), d.h. sie auf unternehmensförderliche Initiativen, Projekte oder Aktivitäten zu fokussieren.
