Es sind vor allem zwei Probleme, die deutsche Unternehmer schlecht schlafen lassen: hohe Löhne und die drastisch zunehmende internationale Konkurrenz. Die wichtigsten Strategien zur Lösung der Probleme sind die Verlagerung der Produktion ins Ausland und die Erschließung neuer Märkte. Beide Strategien werden bislang weitgehend getrennt wahrgenommen und analysiert. Dieser Beitrag plädiert für eine integrierte Herangehensweise, die langfristige Wettbewerbsvorteile verspricht. Die reine Verlagerung der Produktion in Billiglohnländer führt zwar zu kurzfristigen Kostensenkungen, kann aber von der Konkurrenz kopiert werden und bietet somit mittel- und langfristig kaum Vorteile. Die Erschließung neuer Märkte durch Verkaufsbüros in weiteren entwickelten Ländern kann zwar zu vermehrtem Absatz führen, ändert jedoch am Grundproblem, den hohen Kosten, wenig. Die Kombination der beiden Ansätze, eine teilweise Verlagerung der Produktion in Länder mit geringeren Lohnkosten, die aber gleichzeitig einen eigenen Markt darstellen, führt hingegen zum Aufbau von langfristigen Vorteilen im Wettbewerb.
