Werbung stellt meist idealisierte Welten dar und zeigt Lebenssituationen, denen Konsumenten mit Hilfe der beworbenen Produkte nacheifern sollen, wie „magical moments we would like to experience“ (Schudson 1984, S. 221). In letzter Zeit finden sich jedoch Beispiele für Werbekampagnen, die sich absichtlich gegen diese idealtypische Art der Darstellung stellen und ganz normale, aus dem Leben gegriffene — eben authentische — Situationen als Werbegeschichte verwenden. Authentische Werbung bildet Personen und Situationen möglichst echt nach und spiegelt dabei einen Aspekt des umfassenden Bedeutungsgeflechtes des Begriffes Authentizität wider. Eine besondere Rolle kommt dabei den Werbefiguren (Testimonials) zu. Techniken zur Authentifikation von Werbefiguren sind die Nachbildung von „normalen“ Konsumenten oder die Darstellung der wahren Persönlichkeit lebensnaher oder berühmter Werbefiguren. Dieser Beitrag vergleicht am Beispiel des äußeren Erscheinungsbildes von Frauen in Werbeanzeigen die Verwendung „normaler“ Konsumenten als lebensnahe Werbefiguren mit idealisierten Werbefiguren. Dabei wird untersucht, wie authentische und idealtypische Werbung verarbeitet wird und welche Auswirkungen die unterschiedlichen Motive auf die Einstellung zur Werbeanzeige haben. Des Weiteren stellt sich die Frage, ob Konsumenten Abbildungen, die „das wahre Leben“ zeigen, stärker auf sich beziehen als idealisierte Abbildungen. Schließlich ist von Interesse, inwiefern sich Konsumenten in der Wahrnehmung der Authentizität unterscheiden. Als Einflussfaktoren auf diese Wahrnehmung wird das Medienverhalten der Konsumenten herangezogen.
