Mobilizing Intra-Organizational Relationships:

The Challenge of Corporate Venture Capital

  • Chapter

Abstract

Corporate venture capital (CVC) is a strategy which enables companies to benefit from attractive investment opportunities that lie outside their traditional business agenda. Based on case studies of three American and three German players in the field of CVC and using network and social capital theory as a background, we explore how CVC units use their internal relationships with other company units to deliver their value proposition vis-a-vis the portfolio firms. We show that social capital has to be embedded in organizational structures, and that the interplay between social capital and these structures is a critical aspect of understanding the value of social capital.
