Zusammenfassung
Produktionskompetenz wurde bislang überwiegend im Operations Management untersucht (vgl. z.B. Leong et al., 1990). Dort herrscht weitestgehend Einigkeit darüber, dass Produktionskompetenz auf der Unternehmensebene das Bindeglied zwischen Produktions-bzw. Unternehmensstrategie und Unternehmenserfolg darstellt (vgl. z.B. Choe et al., 1997, S. 467). Darüber hinaus vereint Produktionskompetenz sowohl Supply Chain Management-als auch Marketing-bezogene Aspekte, da insbesondere beim Kauf von Lebensmitteln die postulierte Kundenrelevanz ein konstituierendes Merkmal darstellt. Die Bedeutung der Kundenorientierung im Supply Chain Management (SCM) ist hinlänglich bekannt, alle Teildisziplinen sind sich über den Beitrag des SCM zur Erfüllung von Kundenbedürfnissen bzw. –erwartungen einig (vgl. z.B. Christopher, 2005, S. 18). Wenngleich Produktionsaktivitäten zunehmend im Netzwerkverbund erfolgen, ist der Einfluss der Produktion auf die Erfüllung von Kundenbedürfnissen unumstritten (vgl. z.B. Sydow/Möllering, 2004, S. 23). Diesbezüglich wird einerseits empfohlen, die Produktion als Primärfunktion auszulagern und sich auf Kernkompetenzen zu konzentrieren (vgl. z.B. Prahalad/Hamel, 1990), andererseits wird Produktion als „formidable competitive weapon“ (Skinner, 1985) interpretiert. Letztgenannte Auslegung wird u.a. in der Lebensmittelbranche aufgegriffen und mit Konzepten wie der Gläsernen Produktion umgesetzt, wodurch sich Hersteller v.a. gegenüber ihren Wettbewerbern profilieren wollen. Dem Verbraucher soll somit insbesondere die Kompetenz des Herstellers zur Produktion qualitativ hochwertiger Produkte suggeriert bzw. vermarktet werden. „The purpose of thinking and managing strategically is not just to improve operational performance or to defend market share.
