Der Telekommunikationssektor ist stark abhängig von Innovationen: Hochgradig innovative neue Produkte und Services stellen wichtige Quellen nachhaltigen Wachstums dar (Deloitte 2007, Bitkom 2007). Trotz beeindruckender technischer Innovationen bleibt stets die betriebswirtschaftlich relevante Frage: Was erwartet und wünscht sich der Kunde von neuen Produkt- und Serviceangeboten? Die Tatsache, dass Nutzer wichtige Akteure in Innovationsprojekten sind, ist weithin anerkannt: Der Markterfolg neuer Produkte und Services hängt stark davon ab, inwieweit auf die tatsächlichen Wünsche und Bedürfnisse der Kunden abgezielt wird. Gleichzeitig ist die Überfrach-tung mit zu vielen Funktionen und Technologien zu vermeiden (Lettl/Gemünden 2005, Mason/Harris 2005). Das Überschreiten der Grenzen traditioneller Marktforschungsmethoden durch eine intensive Kommunikation mit Kunden im Innovations-prozess wird als wichtiger Schritt in Richtung eines kundenorientierten Innovationsmanagements angeführt (Ernst 2002, Iansiti/Clark 1994). Viele Instrumente der traditionellen Marktforschung (z.B. quantitative Befragungen) sind für die Abschätzung der Marktchancen von innovativen Produkten und Diensten ungeeignet.
