Abstract

We argue that economic growth during the last five decades was made possible, among other things, by a massive substitution process within the fossil fuel sector. Today, however, the strong dependence on fossil energy sources represents one of the most important obstacles for sustainable growth and, therefore, this dependence is a challenge for strategic management in firms and governmental institutions alike. Thus, a gradual but persistent substitution of renewable energy sources for fossil energy sources is required. We indicate how such a substitution process could be modeled and draw some policy and management conclusion.
