Zusammenfassung
Die Vertriebsfunktion ist ein elementarer Bestandteil eines Unternehmens und bestimmt dessen Erfolg (vgl. MacKenzie, Podsakoff und Rich 2001). Dementsprechend versuchen sowohl Praktiker als auch Wissenschaftler, Dimensionen des Verhaltens von Vertriebsmanagern zu finden, um deren Mitarbeiter zu größtmöglichem Erfolg zu verhelfen (vgl. Panagopoulos und Dimitriadis 2009). Kohli (1989) hat diese Dimensionen in drei Kategorien unterteilt: (1) Eigenschaften von Vertriebsmitarbeitern und Rollenverständnis, (2) Eigenschaften der Aufgabe und (3) Verhalten des Managers. Das Verhalten und die Aktivitäten von Vertriebsmanagern beeinflussen Verhalten und Performance ihrer Vertriebsmitarbeiter (vgl. Walker Jr, Churchill Jr und Ford 1977). Forschungsarbeiten haben gezeigt, dass Vertriebsmanager je nach ihrem zugrunde liegenden Führungsstil den Erfolg ihrer Vertriebsmitarbeiter unterstützen, aufrechterhalten oder auch negativ beeinflussen können (vgl. Walker, Churchill und Ford 1979). Einige Aspekte des Managerverhaltens wie z. B. Umfang der Überwachung, Leistungsfeedback, Rücksichtnahme, Aufbau einer Struktur, bestrafendes Verhalten und andere wurden dabei aufgegriffen (vgl. MacKenzie, Podsakoff und Rich 2001). Leider haben diese Ergebnisse nicht sehr viel vom Ergebnis eines Vertriebmitarbeiters erklären können (vgl. MacKenzie, Podsakoff und Rich 2001), so dass nun der Schwerpunkt der Forschung auf denjenigen Verhaltensweisen des Managers liegt, die als transformationaler Führungsstil bekannt sind und von denen angenommen wird, dass sie Vertriebsmitarbeiter befähigen, über das vom Unternehmern definierte Mindestmaß des Erfolges hinaus zu wachsen (vgl. Panagopoulos und Dimitriadis 2009). Zusätzlich ist transformationale Führung weithin akzeptiert und wird als wichtiger Stellhebel für den Vertriebs- und den Unternehmenserfolg gesehen (vgl. Ingram, LaForge und Leigh 2002; Ingram et al. 2005).
