Abstract

No one would possibly think of this scene taking place at an airport. But that is exactly as it is after all. Passengers at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi airport can experience the boom in services that takes place at airports all over the world. However, it is not only the airport industry that slowly but surely discovers the potential of services. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. Today’s world is increasingly characterized by services. The service sector already accounts for twothirds of the world’s total output. This trend is particularly strong in the most advanced economies that are dominated by services, generating often more than 70% of the GDP and employment. In the U.S., e.g., employment in the manufacturing sector has declined over the past 60 years while the services sector grew by 1.9% annually.
