Maple ist ein Computer-Algebra-System (CAS) und löst mathematische Aufgaben mit Hilfe eines digitalen Computers und kann sowohl mit Zahlen als auch mit mathematischen Symbolen umgehen. Ein CAS-Programm arbeitet also einerseits wie ein hoch intelligenter Taschenrechner (natürlich sind die Rechenfähigkeiten eines CAS um Größenordnungen besser als eines Taschenrechners), andererseits besitzt stellt es die Expertise und das Wissen von Hunderten von Mathematikern, die an der Entwicklung eines solchen Programms mitarbeiten.
