Zusammenfassung
Es ist in der Geschichte der Naturwissenschaften das mosaikartige Wirken von Wissenschaftlergenerationen, das zu unserem heutigen Bild der Evolution führte. Selten war eine These oder Theorie so umstritten, und durch religiöse, politische oder persönliche Interessen wurde Unschärfe in dieses Bild gebracht. Kaum ein Wissenschaftszweig kennt so heftige Dispute wie die Evolutionsforschung im Allgemeinen beziehungsweise die Evolutionstheorie im Speziellen. Warum? Sehr wahrscheinlich liegt die Ursache darin begründet, dass es letztlich auch um uns geht. So gebannt wie wir heute, in verstaubten Fotoalben schmökernd, unsere Kindheitserlebnisse wieder in unser Bewusstsein rufen möchten, so zieht uns die Geschichte der Menschheit selbst in den Bann. Neueste Befunde, welche belegen, dass sich in unserem Erbgut Teile des Erbgutes von Neandertalern finden (Green et al. 2010) und somit auf eine Paarung von Neandertalern und modernen Menschen hinweisen, nähren das allgemeine Interesse.
