Die Uneinheitlichkeit der Nomenklatur und der Klassifikation des Vorhof-flimmerns war national und international so groß, dass sich im Juni 2000 eine Gruppe von Kardiologen und Elektrophysiologen zu einer Konferenz zu diesem Thema zusammenfand. Deren Ergebnisse sind zum einen in die Richtlinien internationaler Gesellschaften eingeflossen [11], zum anderen wurden sie separat im Jahre 2003 publiziert [29]. Im klinischen Alltag hat sich die Verwendung dieser vereinheitlichten Nomenklatur bisher nicht ausreichend durchgesetzt. Bevor die Ergebnisse dieser Konferenz vorgestellt werden, sollen kurz die grundsätzlichen Erwägungen und Möglichkeiten bei der Nomenklatur und Klassifikation des Vorhofflimmerns diskutiert werden.
