Die Erkenntnisse zum femoroazetabulären Impingement des Hüftgelenkes—ein intraartikuläres Phänomen/Problem—reichen weit zurück. So hat Preiser bereits 1911 die Einschränkung der Innenrotation als erstes Zeichen der Coxarthrose festgestellt. Deformierungen des Schenkelhalses, die eine Einschränkung der physiologischen Beweglichkeit des Hüftgelenkes bewirken, sind vielfach beschrieben worden. So beschrieb Stuhlberg 1975 die fehlende Taillierung des Schenkelhalses als Pistolengriff-Deformität (pistol grip deformity).
