Es sei D irgendeine Menge reeller Zahlen. Unter einer auf D definierten Funktion f (oder g, h, φ, ψ, …) versteht man eine Vorschrift, die jeder Zahl \(x\in D\) in eindeutiger Weise eine reelle Zahl y = f(x) zuordnet. \(D_f=D\) heißt Definitionsbereich von f. f(x) heißt Bild von x (bzgl. f) oder Wert der Funktion f an der Stelle x. Die Menge \(W_f=W=\{y = f(x): x\in D\}\) heißt Wertebereich von f.
