Abstract
This chapter will first present some hypotheses on the main inefficiencies in Chinese Railways’ operations derived from the key performance indicators introduced in chapter 3.2.1. Chinese Railways’ performance will be compared with the benchmark railways as well as with some other selected railways worldwide. The hypotheses will then be tested and supplemented by information obtained from the research interviews 39 and literature search. The railroad efficiency improvement framework introduced in chapter 3.2.2 will be applied to Chinese Railways in chapter 8. In order to ease application, the inefficiencies will be grouped according to the business fields holding, passenger, freight, and infrastructure from chapter 7.2 onwards.

But Wen also states that there is a limit to what shortening of travel time can achieve.
