Abstract
Oskar Backlund (1846–1916) fait ses études à Uppsala. En 1873, il devient l’assistant de Gyldén à l’Observatoire de Stockholmet soutient en 1875 à l’Université d’Uppsala une thèse sur la planète mineure (112) Iphigenia. Il est embauché comme astronome adjoint en 1876 à l’Observatoire de Dorpat puis en 1879 à l’Observatoire de Poulkovo par OttoWilhelm Struve. Backlund effectue alors toute sa carrière en Russie et se fait naturaliser russe. Il est élu à l’Académie de St. Pétersbourg en 1883 et devient en 1895 le directeur de Poulkovo qu’il dirigera jusqu’à sa mort. Pendant son mandat de directeur, l’Observatoire de Poulkowo connaît un développement sans précédent (augmentation du personnel, achat de matériel, création d’antennes, politique d’accueil de jeunes astronomes).
