Zusammenfassung
Die Infektion gilt heute wohl allgemein als ein Sonderfall des Parasitismus, dessen Wesen als Ansiedelung, Wachstum und Vermehrung eines Organismus in einem Wirt definiert wird. Der Gastcharakter des Parasiten bzw. des Infektionserregers ist nach der übereinstimmenden Auffassung maßgebender Parasitologen und Mikrobiologen ein sekundärer Zustand, der dadurch erreicht wird, daß ein frei lebender Organismus seine Selbständigkeit aufgibt und gegen die Abhängigkeit von fremdem Leben eintauscht [R. Doerr (6)]. Dieser Wechsel des Lebensraumes ist ein in der Zeit ablaufender Anpassungsvorgang. Ist er einmal bis zu einem gewissen Grade vorgeschritten, so kann er nicht mehr rückgängig gemacht werden. Da die Adaptation allmählich erfolgt, muß es möglich sein, verschiedene aufeinanderfolgende Stufen des Parasitismus nachzuweisen.
