Abstract

As quick as computer systems find their way into more and more application fields, on the one hand the variety of information to be computed increases; and on the other hand the requirements on the way of information handling become differently more and more. A practical demonstration of utilizing specific computer technologies for a certain application field may ease the process of system specification and implementation. In a close collaboration with historians a concept of a historical information system has been designed with the objective to demonstrate the utilization of modern computer technology in the rather traditional field of history. It is shown how the variety of historical information and media may be combined and presented with techniques like multimedia, geographical information systems, virtual reality and information networking by means of the World Wide Web.
