Abstract
The first surgical approach to the direct treatment of an intracranial aneurysm was undertaken by Dott in 1931 who reinforced the outer wall of a ruptured aneurysm by wrapping it with strips of muscle. Later McConnell used muscle to pack the interior of an aneurysm which had been opened at surgery. Then in 1937, Dandy used a hemostatic clip to close off the neck of an aneurysm and arrest the blood flow within the sac. Over the next 30 years, surgical neck clipping became the consummate approach for the majority of cerebral aneurysms.
