Die Philosophen des Liberalismus — Hobbes, Locke, Mill, Toqueville — und bürgerlichen Individualismus — Rousseau — geben der liberalistischen Konflikttheorie die grundlegenden Perspektiven und Themen: Was sind die Ursprünge von Macht und Autorität, Herrschaft und Staat, bis hin zu Fragen demokratischer Kontrolle und universaler Gerechtigkeit. Ihre Gedanken finden sich etwa in Webers Theorien über Staat, Bürokratie und Rationalismus oder in Rawls Theorie der Gerechtigkeit (Rawls 1972).
