Summary
In 1988 the World Health Organization launched the global programme for eradication of poliomyelitis by the year 2000. Substantial progress was made in Latin America, where eradication is imminent.
In this paper, discussed are criteria of certification of eradication of poliomyelitis in Latin America. In addition to the formation of commission for certification, the importance is stressed on the continuing epidemiological surveillance based on acute flaccid paralysis, laboratory surveillance of wild polio virus and maintenance of a good immunity level. The concept for certification as described here would be useful in the future in other continents where polio eradication programmes are now in progress.
