Methadone Maintenance Treatment for Harm Reduction Approach to Heroin Addiction

Abstract

It is estimated that there are now over one million persons who have used heroin regularly in the United States and possibly two million that have used heroin at some time. Of these, it is estimated that at least 500,000 are “hard-core” heroin addicts, defined as users of multiple, regular self-administered doses of short-acting opiates such as heroin each day for one year or more, with the development of tolerance, physical dependence and drug seeking behavior, thus, addiction. (42,43,54)
