Der überwiegende Teil der im Büro anfallenden Aufgaben hat mit der Bearbeitung, Speicherung und Übermittlung von Informationen zu tun. Diese Informationen liegen entweder in Form von Dokumenten (z.B. Briefe, Formulare, Graphiken, Bildern) vor, oder werden durch Kommunikation (z.B. persönliches Gespräch, Telefon) vermittelt. Zur Unterstützung der Bearbeitung dieser Informationen werden entsprechende (EDV-) Techniken als Arbeitsmittel eingesetzt.
