The genus Acacia (Leguminosae,Mimosoideae): its affinities as borne out by its pollen characters

Morphology, Development, and Systematic Relevance of Pollen and Spores

Part of the book series: Plant Systematics and Evolution ((SYSTEMATICS,volume 5))

Abstract

Possible affinities of the genus Acacia s.l. are discussed. Notwithstanding the well-known common characters of the genus with the tribe Ingeae, the pollen characters rather suggest its derivation from the Mimoseae. The two main pollen groups recognized in Acacia do not appear directly related. The results support the hypothesis of pleiophily put forward by Pedley in 1986, restricted however to two groups; the first limited to the species included in the genus Acacia sensu Pedley (Acacia subgen. Acacia) and the second including the two other subgg. Aculeiferum and Phyllodineae.
